Voat.co was another social networking website supporting free speech and goes offline today on Christmas. It was very similar to the popular website Reddit and built on the same idea but with no censorship and support free-speech.
Voat.co was launched back in 2014 with the name WhoaVerse as a fun project by Atif Colo. Later in the same year, the website name was changed to Voat. In 2017, Atif Colo resigned from the CEO position, and Chastain joined as the new CEO.
Voat faced a lot of backlashes, and companies like Paypal stopped their payment services for Voat. Due to which Voat’s financial problem started. However, the website continued its operations and started taking donations using Bitcoins as a medium.
On January 22, 2020, Chastain announced that they would be shutting down their services this Christmas. And, as stated, Voat.co shut down their services on Christmas. Chastain explained why shutting down the services as a lack of funds because one of the company’s key investors backed off and defaulted on their contract.
Today, On December 25, 2020, Voat.co shut down their services. Voat homepage reads “Voat has Shutdown. Voat was sacrificed on December 25th, 2020 at 12 noon PST,” and a hyperlink is available which links to a page on searchvoat.co page where a user PutitOut explained the reason for the shutdown.
